Way Maker Midwife: Hilary

Hello! My name is Hilary Goodner. I am a Certified Professional Midwife and an Oklahoma Licensed Midwife. I have lived and worked in the Tulsa area for over 15 years now.

When I first moved to Tulsa, I lived in Broken Arrow and was working for a Tulsa ambulance service while going to Paramedic School at Tulsa Tech. I enjoyed the fast paced life that came with EMS, but did not love the Western medical model.

After I had my first son, I decided to leave EMS and find a different career. I started working for Regional Medical Lab working all throughout Tulsa and the surrounding areas. Over the course of five years working for the lab, I was assigned to both free standing labs and a variety of doctor’s offices. I enjoyed the work and the hours, but life brought changes that redirected my path.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I decided I wanted a different labor and birth with her, so I started researching. It was during that research I came across the word “doula.” Intrigued, I dug deeper into all things natural childbirth and what a doula was. I knew that this was something that I would love to know more about and possibly even become.

During my time researching, I found a link to Tulsa Doulas and immediately inquired into the organization.  A doula training was happening in three weeks and I was already 34 weeks pregnant, but I decided it would be worth it for not just myself, but maybe even for others. This is where my love for physiological labor and birth began.

I went to the doula training and met so many wonderful women from the Tulsa area. We learned so much in that three day, hands-on workshop! During the class, my teacher asked me if I would participate in having some pictures taken of me pregnant in different labor and birthing positions for educational purposes and my answer was, of course, “Yes!”

At 38 weeks, I took over 400 pictures in so many positions I lost count. It was an excellent learning experience and helped me solidify birth positions, as well as get closer to the wonderful woman that helped train me (these pictures were part of a book, The Peanut Ball: Basic and Advanced Techniques for Use During Labor and Delivery).

After I had my daughter and was done with postpartum time off, I began taking any and every birth in the Tulsa area. After two years as a Doula, I joined the board of Tulsa Doulas as their Vice President and served in that capacity for two years before serving as the President of Tulsa Doulas for four years, while also continuing to work as a Birth Doula.

As all of this was happening, we were called to our church in Glenpool, a suburb of Tulsa. After a couple of years in the church, we started going on mission trips to Mexico to help bring the Word, prayer, backpacks, shoes, clothes, Christmas gifts, etc. It was during this time that I was called to be a Midwife.

When I came home I did research and looked around the Tulsa area for a place to study midwifery. I could not find anything close to Tulsa and my children were too small to be going back and forth all the time for school, so I thought maybe God meant later.

However, it was just a few months later that one of the birth centers in Tulsa that I had done doula work at asked me to be a Birth Assistant. In our first meeting, they told me they would also pay me to train to be a midwife. It was a dream come true; God opened a door and made a way where there was no way!

I spent the next three and a half years working towards learning all the didactic knowledge and skills needed to be a Certified Professional Midwife. In August of 2023, I took my Certified Professional Midwifery test in Tulsa, OK, and PASSED!!! I then sent my information to the State of Oklahoma and became a Licensed Midwife in December of 2023.

Now, I am working as the Midwife at Way Maker Midwifery. I see my clients in the comfort of their own homes; I do every prenatal visit, postpartum visit, lab draw, and delivery in the comfort of their own homes. Way Maker Midwifery includes a childbirth education class for our clients to complete, because we believe that knowledge is power. We also created a book that is full of recommendations, a weekly pregnancy guide, supplements for pregnancy, exercises, and more, all intended to make your pregnancy a more comfortable journey.

As a Certified Professional Midwife in Tulsa, Way Maker Midwifery serves low-risk mamas in the Tulsa area, and within an hour radius of the surrounding Tulsa area. I will add, if you are further away please don’t hesitate to reach out, as we make those decisions on a case-by-case basis.

I am so excited about this midwife/small business owner journey. I have been in awe watching God work this entire time – seeing that everything I had done until this point has been part of His amazing plan and has equipped me to have everything I need in this moment. He truly does make all things work together for your GOOD!

I am so excited that I get to share the love of Jesus with every mother, father, baby, brother, sister, grandma, aunt, and cousin as I come into contact with them through this journey. I look forward to working in the Tulsa area for many years to come, serving women with love and compassion. I thank God for opening every door I needed to walk through and closing every door I didn’t.
