Maternity Care

Psalm 127:3-5a

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!

The heart and soul of midwifery is maternity care. Way Maker provides a more unique approach with the women we care for and support, beginning with one hour prenatal visits in the privacy and comfort of their own home. In this more intimate, laid-back setting, we offer healthy, low-risk pregnant women complete care, including labs, nutritional support, and evidence-based resources to enable them to make informed decisions regarding their bodies and their babies – with the unrushed time to discuss any questions and concerns. Our maternity care also includes Childbirth Education Classes – to help prepare everyone emotionally and physically for labor and childbirth – and postpartum care.

Every mother who comes to Way Maker can expect prenatal visits every four weeks until reaching 28 weeks of pregnancy, every two weeks until reaching 36 weeks, and then every week until the time of birth. The prenatal visits are a time for assessing the health of both mother and baby, including tracking fundal height of the uterus, taking mother’s vitals, and having time to go over new information and resources.

Your midwife is always on call for you, especially as you get closer to your due date. You and your midwife will be in contact when there may be signs labor has begun. The midwife will come assess you, take vitals for both you and your baby, and once active labor is presumed, will stay with you after the baby is born. The midwife will call in a birth assistant when needed to provide an extra set of skilled hands. After the birth of your baby, the midwife and birth assistant will stay until it is determined that both you and your baby are stable and healthy, while cleaning up the birth space, ensuring you have time to bond. This immediate postpartum time also includes a newborn assessment and postpartum care instructions.

The final stage of pregnancy, often called the Fourth Trimester, is the postpartum stage. Your midwife will also come to your home for postpartum visit after 24 hours, one week, two weeks, four weeks, and six weeks. Some babies might require a little extra care, especially when being monitored for jaundice, so there may be more visits depending on the situation. Should you be unable to have a homebirth – or simply not choose to have a homebirth – but are still looking for that more intimate care, Way Maker wants to be able to provide that for you. Whether prenatal or postpartum visits, Childbirth Education classes, support during your labor and birth in a hospital setting, or some combination of these, we are happy to discuss your options to ensure you have a safe, supportive pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
